This course aims to introduce students to a number of fiction from the late-eighteenth century to the early-nineteenth century. All the novels discussed in this course are written by women writers, including the more well-known writer as well as the marginalized ones. This course will explore the use of language/ representations and consider the implications of the French Revolution and political turbulence in these novels. 

課程目標
 This course hopes to introduce students to some of the best novels by British women writers in this period. By the end of this course, students will acquire knowledge of key aspects of writing of this period. Students will be able to relate these novels to their historical and cultural contexts, and to develop familiarity with the concept of a female literary tradition.

 Quizzes 
50% 
 There will be a number of unannounced small quizzes during the semester. These quizzes are designed to ensure that students read the assigned novels before class (in the form of ID questions, short-answer questions, etc.). Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period. No make-up quizzes will be allowed. Students are also expected to participate actively in in- class activities and group discussions. Students will be given the opportunity to review and edit their own and other’s written work in class.

 Final exam 
40% 
 Students need to take one final exam (which accounts for 40% of their final grades) on 19th December. No book (hard copy or e-format), notes, or electronic devices is permitted. No make-up exam will be allowed, unless reasonable excuse is provided beforehand (for sick leave, official medical report should be presented).
